Stitching Music 🤎

Art Exhibition in May

Hello Kindred Spirit! Thank you again for having subscribed to my monthly newsletter. It’s so nice to connect!

This week I dropped off a piece at the Tiernan Hallway Gallery for The Art League of RI’s juried exhibition “Symphony in Fiber: Harmony in Color and Texture”. The show explores how music can be expressed through fiber art. It runs from May 3-May 31. I’m really excited to see all the other pieces in the exhibition and how other artists interpreted the theme.

My piece in the show visually expresses the auditory experience of trying to focus on a message or melody that is drowned out by noise. It’s titled “Seeking Sound in Static”. I posted a detail of the piece on IG here. The official description is “Atop a backdrop of static as irregular grey noise divided by a guitar string are organized sound waves as delicate symmetrical orange hand-stitched bars whose voice struggles to be noticed. Paint is hand-mixed charcoal in soy.”

Is there a more perfect marriage than music and visual art (OK, except perhaps dance)? Are there things you can’t imagine doing without music (again…besides dance)? Ever since I can remember, music has been my companion to drawing, painting, shaping, soldering, weaving, and other kinds of creating. I have different playlists for different projects and often revert to the soundtrack of my high school and college years to tap into a flow vibe. A couple years ago when I worked on a mural over several months, I rarely strayed from the same two albums by the same artist. The final product depended on it. Music keeps me hyper focused to block out distractions, digressions, counternarratives, aggressions, and the passing of time.

What would the world be like without music? What would art be without music?

The opening is from 5:30PM-7:30PM this Saturday, May 3rd, at 80 Fountain St., Suite 107A, Pawtucket, RI. If you are able and interested, I’d love to connect at the show. I think there will be some pretty thought-provoking pieces on display. If it’s not in the cards, I humbly ask you to grab a pencil and sketch your favorite music. It bet you it will be beautiful.

Until next time,
