A picture is worth a thousand words, but how do we find the words?
I don’t know about you, but there are some things I prefer to express visually. Words can be tricky, although they are sometimes essential in order to convey context and intention. Continually updating the artist statement and bio on my website and for applications can be tedious. And, the lower the word count requirement, the more challenging it is. I write, rewrite, edit, delete, redo, read, question, repeat on everything — even emails (…and newsletters). You too?
This month I had the extra challenge of an artist talk, with another one next month. (See details below.) It is so hard to verbalize what my brain and hands did while in visual mode. If you have the blessing and curse of speaking more than one language, you may find the perfect word, but it doesn’t match the sentence or your audience.
I appreciate critiques and reviews. They help me understand my own meaning. I often find that objective observers can translate my visuals better than I. I am fortunate to have a review in Art Spiel (a NYC-based contemporary art magazine) this week. Adria Arch, the author, describes my piece succinctly and spot-on. I am happy to offer you some nice word salad if you’d like to hear more about it though.
In addition to the artist talk for the “America, Unfinished?!” exhibition at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence, I’m offering a free workshop there next week. I’ll share how I make paint with pigment in soy, and you can explore painting on your own squares of cloth and paper. Join in on Thursday, August 6th from 7-9pm. Get there for 6pm and you can also participate in Filipe Miguel’s cyanotype workshop. Everyone is welcome!
